Using translated poems by Edgar Allan Poe as its libretto, Rachmaninov’s choral symphony The Bells takes the listener on a journey from innocence to experience in a work full of colour, texture and emotion. From the tinkling bells of childlike joy, through wedding bells and alarm, Rachmaninov brings the audience to the inevitable tolling of funeral bells; yet even in these darker moments there is incredible dignity and grandeur.
